In addition to its reputation as the relatively more commercial free and natural of beach resort destinations, Mazatlan also is the busiest seaport between Los Angeles and the Panama Canal, and is the largest seaport in Mexico. The long stretch of beach separating the port in the oldest section of town from the newer Zona Dorada, the Golden Zone of tourist resorts in the north, is used by visitors and residents alike, and serves to keep the two sections of Mazatlan separate but distinct, while encouraging commerce between them. Mazatlan’s Mardi Gras, second in size only to Brazil’s Carnival, affords an excellent opportunity for tourists and residents to mingle. The unique arrangement of old and new is making Mazatlan a popular alternative to the larger and more established Acapulco, as well as the newer and hipper Cancun and Los Cabos destinations.
